Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow as Europe’s busiest hub, with the Turkish airport managing 8.15 million passengers in July compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift marks a significant change in air traffic patterns, with Heathrow experiencing a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers from the previous July, while Istanbul Airport saw a 2.3% increase. The decline at Heathrow has been partially attributed to disruptions caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which have impacted travel to and from the UK.
This development has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight the expansion of Heathrow, which currently operates at near full capacity with its two runways. The proposed third runway is seen as a critical solution to increase the airport’s capacity, potentially boosting it to handle around 150 million passengers annually. Heathrow officials argue that expanding the airport is crucial for maintaining and enhancing the UK’s global trade, tourism, and connectivity.
Opened in 2018, Istanbul Airport has quickly established itself as a major player in international air travel. Boasting a larger site and 24-hour operations, the airport currently has three runways, with plans to open a fourth by the end of 2026. This infrastructure allows Istanbul Airport to efficiently manage a high volume of passengers, contributing to its rise above Heathrow in the rankings.
While Heathrow faces challenges, other UK airports have reported record-breaking passenger numbers. London Stansted and Manchester airports both celebrated their busiest July ever, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester managing 3.4 million. These figures highlight the growing demand for air travel in the UK, despite the pressures on Heathrow.
