Amid ongoing tensions with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to accept a modest rise in gasoline prices, citing the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen disruptions in shipping activity. At a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that the slight increase in fuel costs is a necessary sacrifice to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He further suggested the possibility of declaring the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory following a victory over Iran.
Iranian officials have swiftly dismissed Trump’s assertions, insisting that the Strait, a critical corridor for international oil and natural gas trade, remains under Iranian control. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran will maintain the blockade until the U.S. acknowledges its purported defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that while Tehran has not agreed to resume negotiations with Washington, shipping activities in the strait would only recommence if the U.S. complies with Iran’s stipulations.
The ongoing standoff has led to significant disturbances in tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in increased crude oil prices and mounting pressure on fuel costs worldwide. As a consequence, the average gasoline price in the United States has surged to approximately $4.08 per gallon, reflecting a 29% hike compared to the previous year. Additionally, Brent crude prices are on track for a notable weekly rise.
This economic strain is also being felt within Iran, where President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed rising inflation to the U.S.-imposed blockade, sanctions, and limitations on Iranian oil exports. In response, the Trump administration has warned of imposing further financial sanctions on Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to achieve a ceasefire remain at a standstill.
